Roodepoort is a city in Gauteng, South Africa. Roodepoort, means "red valley" in Afrikaans. It gets its name from the red soil found in the residential area. Back in 1884,  brothers Fred and Harry Struben discovered gold,  on the farm Wilgespruit in the centre of Roodepoort. As gold fever was in, four farms including Roodepoort, were soon declared public diggings.
The farm Roodepoort opened up its land because diggers needed a place to pitch their tents, giving rise to a shantytown. Four mining towns, Roodepoort, Florida, Hamberg and Maraisburg, were proclaimed between 1886 and 1888. In 1886 a community was established in Roodepoort.
Roodepoort was a gold-mining center in the West Rand area.
